January 31 – 12:59 p.m. – Washington, DC

Yates blinked up at the circle of faces staring down at him. There was something covering his nose and mouth, and he could feel air coming through the opening. An oxygen mask? He heard a beeping noise above the murmur of voices. It took a moment for him to realize he was being wheeled through the hall while lying on a gurney.

“Wait,” he croaked. “I . . . need a minute . . . to talk to the president.” He felt breathless even though the pain in his chest wasn’t as bad as it had been earlier.

The people rushing him out of the building ignored him. Had they heard him? He could barely hear himself.

“Give him more nitro,” someone shouted. “His blood pressure is sky high.”

A hand pressed something against his bare chest. Wait a minute, where was his shirt? Was he really being wheeled out of the White House halfway naked?

“Stop! Wait!” He reached out to grab one of the men’s hands. There was an IV catheter in his arm, dripping fluid into his veins.

“Give him something to calm down,” someone snapped, “or we’ll never make it to the hospital!”

“Try to relax, sir. We’re getting you the care you need right away!” The cart moved faster, so much so that he couldn’t see anyone’s faces clearly. Then he noticed a syringe attached to a port on the IV tubing.

The darkness returned once again.
